Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between biodegradable and compostable?
The term biodegradable is often used loosely and can be misleading. Technically, all materials break down over time – but how long they take and what they leave behind is what really matters.
A standard disposable facemask can take up to 450 years to break down, often leaving behind harmful microplastics that never fully disappear.
By contrast, Ecodefend’s 100% biodegradable compostable facemasks decompose in as little as 180 days, leaving behind only harmless organic matter.
No microplastics. No long-term waste.
How do I dispose of my Ecodefend facemask?
If you’re based in Tasmania or South Australia, simply pop your used mask into your green FOGO bin – easy.
If you’re elsewhere in Australia and your council doesn’t yet support compostable mask disposal, we’ve got you covered. Get in touch with our team, and we’ll arrange free disposal options at no cost to you. Yes, we’ll invest the time and money to make it happen.
If composting isn’t available yet in your area, the mask can still go in the general waste. While this isn’t the ideal option, it’s worth noting that our masks still break down much faster and more cleanly than conventional masks, with no microplastics left behind and a significantly lower carbon footprint.
How is Ecodefend different from other companies?
Ecodefend was founded by a nurse – someone who truly understands the importance of comfort, safety, and performance in PPE. Our masks have been rigorously tested for use across all sectors, including healthcare. Full testing reports are available on request.
Beyond the product itself, we’re committed to education and awareness around waste, sustainability, and smarter systems. We partner with businesses to make the switch to compostable products simple, seamless, and cost-effective.
Is Ecodefend planning to release more products?
Absolutely. The 100% biodegradable compostable mask is just the beginning. We’re actively developing a broader range of sustainable PPE and consumables. Sign up to our newsletter to stay in the loop on future launches and innovations.
