Born from frontline experience and a deep concern for the future, the idea was sparked not in a boardroom, but in the real-world pressure of a global pandemic crisis. What followed was a bold step toward rethinking waste at the source, led by someone who had seen the problem firsthand and refused to ignore it.
Company
Ecodefend began with a simple but urgent question: What if essential protection didn’t come at the planet’s expense?
Meet the Founder:
Kaitlyn Cooke
Kaitlyn Cooke, a registered nurse from Hobart, Tasmania, founded Ecodefend after witnessing firsthand the overwhelming volume of waste generated in her hospital ward during the pandemic. Shocked to discover that truly microplastic-free disposable masks didn’t exist, she made the bold decision to leave her job and create a better solution.
Ecodefend wasn’t built to capitalise on a crisis or offer a superficial fix. It began with one nurse, in one hospital, recognising a serious problem – and choosing to do something about it.
Since launching Ecodefend, Kaitlyn has not only led the development of the first 100% fully biodegradable compostable face mask of its kind, but also helped establish Tasmania-wide household FOGO disposal for compostable masks – an Australian first.
Kaitlyn continues to advocate for smarter, more sustainable waste solutions. She regularly engages with small businesses, raises awareness around waste reduction, and is currently in active discussion with government ministers across the environment, small business, and sustainability sectors.
She also collaborates with like-minded makers and innovators, supporting a growing network of businesses dedicated to driving climate-positive change. And with more sustainable product ideas already underway, it’s clear that for Kaitlyn and Ecodefend, the 100% biodegradable compostable mask is just the beginning.
